Pioneering the ASHOKA®

William Goldberg possessed an extraordinary gift for turning rough stones into iconic treasures. Then he encountered a diamond that had already achieved iconic status. Unearthed from a longlost mine in India’s legendary Golconda region. Shaped by an unknown master of exceptional artistry. The ASHOKA® diamond bore the name of one of history’s most powerful and compassionate leaders.

William Goldberg was captivated by the original ASHOKA® diamond—so much so that it sparked something deeper. It moved him to develop a cut so singular and remarkable, it earned its own patent.

ASHOKA® — A Legend is Born

The original ASHOKA®diamond was a stunning 41 carat D Flawless gem. The diamond had a mysterious past, its earliest owners unknown. In 1947, it came under the auspices of Harry Winston, who purchased it from an Indian trader. Though the famed diamond merchant recognized its unusual beauty immediately, he did not keep the stone for long. Just years later, Mexican movie star María Félix claimed it, giving it pride of place as one of the most treasured pieces in her collection.

A Diamond Beyond Compare

Only the rarest rough can become an ASHOKA® diamond. Fewer than one percent meet the exacting criteria. The rough must possess exceptional size and length. The cut must honor the stone’s inherent qualities with absolute precision. The polish must achieve unrivaled standards of perfection.

William Goldberg Diamonds

Family bonds run deep here. Three generations working together over the past seven decades brings something truly special to the experience. William Goldberg’s first company was founded in 1952, and today the Goldbergs have embraced the business of creating unparalleled jewelry. From diamond engagement rings to eternity bands and the high jewelry collection, each piece carries its own legacy. In the words of William Goldberg, “What is true of people is also true of diamonds—the greatest beauty is that which comes from deep within.”

“William Goldberg saw a diamond as a work of art.” “He believed it was wrong to cheat a diamond of its beauty.” “In his hands, a stone became extraordinary.” These words, spoken by those who knew him, are repeated again and again throughout his life and long after his passing. Bill and diamonds were inextricable: It is impossible to imagine Bill’s life without sparkling stones. And it’s just as difficult to imagine the world of diamonds without Bill’s contributions.
